About the MGA
Managing general agency, explained.
A managing general agency, or MGA, is an insurance professional entity that has been granted underwriting authority by one or more insurance carriers. Unlike a retail agent, an MGA can bind coverage, issue policies, and in many cases settle claims on the carrier’s behalf.
We hold binding authority across admitted and surplus lines markets, including Lloyd’s syndicates where we are an Authorized Lloyd’s Coverholder.
The model is straightforward. You bring us the risk. We place it with the right market, often one you would not have access to directly. Coverage gets issued, claims get handled, and you keep the client relationship.
In most circumstances we provide retail agents with agency agreements and introduce you to a specific underwriting in order to provide a ready market for placing risks.
Why this structure exists
Carriers do not want to underwrite every risk themselves.
Especially in specialist or unusual lines where deep subject knowledge is required. They delegate that work to MGAs with proven track records in specific niches. The MGA takes on the underwriting and policy administration. The carrier provides the security.
For retail agents, the advantage is access. Most carriers will not deal directly with individual retail offices. They deal with a small number of trusted MGAs and wholesale brokers. We are one of those.
